AR tutorial

You will be asked to move and rotate your phone. The camera will “place” the ring on a surface in front of you. If you cannot get the ring to place, you may need better light or to show more of your surroundings in the camera. Please stick with it while slowly moving your phone and try to keep a corner of the surface in view.

Here is a tutorial video

You may require a flat surface and decent lighting in order for the AR system to work as intended. If this doesn’t suit you right now please feel free to come back when or if it suits, you won’t have to go through the information and consent form again!

Introduction to Study

Invitation

You are being invited to consider taking part in the research study “The Impact of 3D and AR Product Presentation on Product Uncertainty and User Experience”. This project is being undertaken by Robert McLoughlin.

Before you decide whether or not you wish to take part, it is important for you to understand why this research is being done and what it will involve. Please take time to read this information carefully and discuss it with friends and relatives if you wish. Please ask if there is anything that is unclear or if you would like more information.

Purpose of Research

The purpose of this research is to examine the effects of different types of product presentation on mental imagery, product certainty and UX.

If I take part, what do I have to do?

You will be asked to explore a product page on this website and fill out 4 short questionnaires. This should take no more than five minutes.

What are the benefits of taking part?

There are no expected benefits for the participants from taking part in this study other than moving human knowledge forward and contributing to the design of better products in future.

What are the disadvantages of taking part?

There are no expected disadvantages for the participants from taking part in this study.

How will information about me be used?

The data collected today will be used in a Masters thesis for the UX Design program in IADT Dun Laoghaire. No personal or identifying information will be used and the data will be entirely anonymous.

Who will have access to information about me?

The data from this research is stored securely on a password-protected server. The data is unlinked-anonymous, meaning no data can be identified as yours. The data will be kept for five years, after which it will be deleted.

What will happen to the results of the study?

The results of this research will be used in a final year thesis for the MSc in UX Design program in the Dun Laoghaire Institute of Art, Design & Technology. A soft copy of this thesis will be available in the library in IADT once it is completed.

Who has reviewed the study?

This study has been approved by the Department of Technology and Psychology Ethics Committee (DTPEC).

What if there is a problem?

If you have a concern about any aspect of this study, you may wish to speak to the researcher who will do their best to answer your questions. Contact information is at the bottom.

Sizing

If you aren’t sure how to size your ring, take a piece of paper and wrap it around you finger. Mark where the paper starts to overlap, unwind it and measure that distance using a ruler. That’s the inner circumference of the ring size, which you can use to find the size with any ring size chart.

Materials

Solid Sterling Silver Band
Quartz, brilliant cut stone

Thank you for completing that task! The next few questions will ask about your perception of the product. Please rate how much you agree or disagree with each statement.

If you looked at the "AR" view, please disregard it in your answers, only report on the "Object" view and the product page.

You will now be presented with pairs of contrasting words. Please mark where on the spectrum best describes your experience as a whole, not just the product. Try to make your assessment spontaneously, even if you feel neither word captures the experience perfectly. Remember that there are no "right" or "wrong" answers - your personal opinion is what counts.

The goal of this research is to examine the effects of product presentation of an ecommerce product on the mental imagery generated. This, in turn, is thought to affect product uncertainty and user experience.
